switched power

what are my options

switched power

Postby adkman [OP] » Feb 22 2012, 10:59am

I need to have a swithed power source for three items preferably with RAP. My question is can I do this from one source or do I need three seprate sources? And also where is the easiest place to get it from?

It all depends what you are using the three sources for and how much each one will draw. If its an amp the switched side of it generally doe'nt draw that much current. as far as where to get it from i am unsure bec i have just gotten my truck but im sure there is a remote turn on for the antenna already in the radios wiring harness

Need more info, you can't draw much current from the RAP circuit. What are you trying to power?

Two amps and a cap. I never thought about power antenna, if I can use this would I need to run a slight heavier wire to offset the distance I have to go. Or does turn on power not draw enough to matter.

Depends on size of amps but amps turn ons don't generally draw a lot of power it's almost like a relay. U could run one decent gauge wire and then branch from one amp to the the other. And by cap do you mean capictor?

Yes a capacitor also but I believe it's just for a digital readout I dont think you need a switched power to use it I may be wrong though.

ok ive never used a capcitor from my systems cause ive always had diesels with two batts never needed one, also on your truck isnt it a high amp altenator are you sure you even need one? capcitors are for honda civics with no balls most truck can keep up to the output you need even at idle.

well I'm going to run about 2k watts continuous. 1.3k of that is subs, I figured it was better to use a cap for the deep bass instead of putting that stress on the alternator.

I suppose so lol! i was thinking u were running a couple of subs not at high watts. but 2k continuous what are you running ? might be better to run your remote turn on to a relay if your worried about amperage draw!

Keep in mind that after that short period where the cap unloads the power its stored, that the alternator is going to have to charge it back up. Capacitors take an infinite amount of time to fully charge so that is constant strain on the alternator.
