First Silverado (2009, Blue/Ext. Cab, 5.3L V8)

Postby ID Outdoorsman [OP] » Jan 09 2012, 3:36am

Hey everyone, I decided to stop lurking in the shadows and officially join the forum. After two years of searching I finally pulled the trigger and bought my Silverado on Saturday. Simply put, I'm in love-- it's slightly ridiculous. Until recently I had primarily been looking at Fords (don't hate, I didn't know any better), but luckily my attention shifted to chevy/gmc rigs. I intend to use it as my primary means of daily transport (unless the weather is nice and I decide to pull out the Ninja) and for off road adventures. I don't plan to do any crazy wheeling/mudding, but I will be using it frequently for hunting and fishing trips.

Currently: The truck is certified pre-owned, aka about as stock as it could be. The only real features to mention are that it is a 6spd., has a towing package, and has 35k miles under its belt.

Immediate Future: I have quite a list of additions and work that I want to accomplish over the next two months or so-- likely sooner than later. As I work through each one I would love to have your guys input, suggestions, or just misc. thoughts. This is the first truck I have owned so I am kind of moving through uncharted territory here and use all the help and insight that I can get.

My To-Do List:
[small items]
- Seat covers: Clazzio-- leather/black
- SES Billet Grille
- Window tint
[bigger items]
- BDS 4 or 6 inch lift (keep going back and forth, thoughts?)
- XD Rockstar wheels w/ Toyo Open Country MT (33")

Any thoughts or suggestions on the above items?
As for the lift... After reading through the forums I have been unable to find anything that resembles a consensus-- everyone def seems to have their own unique opinion on this one. Basically, I have no interest in going up to 35" tires. I want the truck to be able to fit the tires with as high of a lift that doesn't scream, "what's the deal... is that guy waiting to put on bigger tires?"

And, final question--- what do you guys usually do with your stock wheels/tires are lifting your truck? Craigslist, ebay, ???

Thanks!

Welcome!

Two thoughts-

You can probably trade in your stock tires\wheels if you buy new ones at a reputable tire shop... that's what I've done in the past. You probably won't get as much $$ that way, but it's easier than going through ebay and craigslist!

You may want to add some HP to the engine, if you're going to lift the truck and add bigger tires. More drag=harder working engine, so it might be best to compensate for that.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Great suggestions. I was actually just thinking about trading the tires/wheels in when the shop puts on my lift next Wednesday or talking to my dealership and seeing if they are interested.

Since all threads need pictures, I've attacked a pic [not the best, I'll take some better ones in the morning]

As for the truck: I decided on the 4" BDS lift-- even after reading all of the comments suggesting that people who buy 4" instead of 6" end up regretting it later. I really have no interest in 35" shoes, and I don't want to regear... So, I feel pretty assured that I won't regret going with the 4. I'm going to drop it off at the shop next wednesday to have the lift and tires put on (i'll post pics of course).

The seat covers are supposed to get in Thursday. Hopefully I'll be able to get them put on the same day.

Any suggestions for increasing the HP to compensate for the lift/tires? The truck is certified pre owned, so I don't really want to mess with chips/tuners/whatever. But, I am thinking about putting in an Volant cold air intake and upgrading the exhaust. What else should I look into? Anyone else have a similar truck-- I would love to hear what your experiences have been.

oh, and I almost forgot to mention that I changed my mind about the tires. I have the BFG KM2's on my FJ62 cruiser, and after talking to the tire shop I decided to go with them on the truck as well.

Welcome aboard! Nice truck!

I sold my stock wheels on Craigslist. It works better if you're in a populated area, I immagine. Good luck!
