New guy from Canada!

Postby ShARpY308 [OP] » Jul 28 2012, 6:54am

Hey I just signed up on this site today and I am loving it so far! I am 17 years old and from Saskatchewan, Canada. By my age some of you would probably guess I did not pay for my own vehicles but I have worked for and payed for the three trucks I have owned since I got my license which I am pretty proud of. I am about to start grade 12 this coming sept. and I am currently working as a truck driver at a vehicle auction which is awesome considering and I am a Welder/Laborer at my family's Fabricating and Machining shop.

Now as for the trucks I have owned.

My first truck was a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L V8 4x4 Ext Cab with 160,000kms. I bought the truck for $3000 CAD and like a typically teenager about to buy their first vehicle I was to excited to pay attention to all the bad things about the vehicle lol. While it was a great truck when it came to getting through rough trails, mud holes, and just off roading in general because it had a LSD. It was plagued with problems that eventually lead to me selling it about 3 months after buying it. The roof leaked, It burned oil, tranny was weak, power steering was failing, there was a clunk in the front end when making sharp turns, and the front tires shimmied at 60 mph.

My second truck was a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L V8 SLE 4 door Ext Cab RWD with 253,000kms when bought. I bought this truck from the auction I work for about $3200 CAD. I bought it knowing the transmission was blown and I thought I would just fix it up and sell it making a profit. About $1300 dollars later I replaced the transmission with one that had 121,000 Kms(Took my Dad and myself 14 hours lol), Replaced the ball joints, Drive shaft U joints, Put on better tires, replaced Intermediate Steering shaft, and rear brake pads. I could not sell the truck for the amount of money I wanted so I ended up keeping the truck for about 10 months and put 11,000 kms on it then sold it for $4500 gaining nothing and losing nothing.

My third and current truck is a 2003 GMC Sierra 2500 6.0L V8 SLT 4 Door Ext Cab 4x4 with 125,000 kms. I bought this truck last Saturday again at the auction I work at knowing that it need some work. I paid $6600 total for it which I think is not that bad considering the mileage. So far I had to replace the front driver side hub assembly as the bearing was blown, have a big hole in the driver and passenger seat patched up, Change the air filter and oil. Now I am about to change the rear driver side caliper as it is leaking bad, replace the rear drive shaft u joints, and figure out what is wrong with the speedo. I plan fixing this truck and keeping it for a long time as with the mileage once it is fixed up it should great bush and hunting truck.

That is the story behind my experience with trucks. I have payed for everything except on the dodge my grandpa gave me $900 as he has helped all his kids/grand kids with buying their first vehicle. Also I have had a lot of help from my Dad when it came to actually fixing the vehicles, and I couldn't have done it without him which I am very grateful for his help.

Welcome to the site, you have had more trucks at 17 than I have at 67, but well done on funding them yourself.

WELCOME, and congrats on the 2nd GMC truck! Nice to see a young man who is interested in trucks, and in earning the money to get them himself. Glad you joined us here!
