New guy in Northren BC

Postby eden_oil&gas [OP] » Feb 05 2012, 3:23am

Hey Guy's,

Im new here and I was on a GMC diesel forum before, went through a divorce and the truck had to go.

I was and still am way into mods and DIY for my truck. I used to say I dont have much hobbies but now I can say this is one of my higher hobbies that I have.

I have a ton of kids and work in the oil and gas fields in northren BC.

I bought a new GMC 1500 5.3 CC S-box and did not go back to a diesel because it is so expensive to run now a days. The price of diesel now is 1.30/L and there is issues with the new diesels and freezing up here in the north.

I will post pic's later when I get some time.

WELCOME!
Glad ya found the site, and congrats on the new truck. Working the oil fields must be difficult work. I am in the Transportation profession, and we hear a lot about Canada's "Oil Sands". I'd love you perspective on it. Is it as bad for the environment as we hear? What do you think about the Keystone XL pipeline?

Thanks and welcome!

Postby gmctruckguy » Feb 05 2012, 6:14pm

Welcome to the forum from another Canuk and "patch" hand. I mainly work in Northern Alberta in the oil sands area. This is a pretty good site, lots of knowledgeable people and opinions.

Welcome to the site!! Before i sold my 07 dmax for my new truck i heard some grumblings on my diesel site about the "freezing" your talking about. Pretty sure they are/were having some problems with the urea solution freezing and spliting the urea tank, if i recall correctlly they have that fixed with a heating element.

Thanks guys. I still have to post pic's but my truck is so dirty right now. And about the Oil sands thats a touchy subject. I dont work up there and alot of that oil is attached to the sand granules and there is a way different process to recover that oil then the conventional means im used to. Also I work for a midstreaming company and what we do is sweetin up and take all the water out of the gas. The Keystone XL pipeline i think its great and not bad at all. the safety is second to none in the oil and gas industry in Canada. And has for the environment in the oil sands I think time will tell.

Extracting and upgrading Alberta’s oil sands account for about 0.15% of global GHG emissions. Air quality is monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at 16 stations across the region. Air quality in the oil sands region is rated good – the highest quality level – 95% of the time. All existing and approved oil sands projects may withdraw no more than 3% of the average annual flow of the Athabasca River; 2008 usage was 0.7% of the long-term average annual flow. Oil sands projects recycle 80 to 95 per cent of water used.
Alberta has monitored water quality in the oil sands region since the early 1970s. Data indicates no increased concentration of contaminants in surface water in the oil sands area. Aggressive tailings management criteria by the Energy Resources Conservation Board include a mandated reduction in tailings and target dates for closure and reclamation of ponds. Alberta’s boreal forest covers 381,000 square kilometers. About 660 square kilometres has been disturbed by oil sands mining. More than 50,000 square kilometres is under provincial or national designation (park). Twenty-three of Alberta’s 50 largest protected areas, and Canada’s largest national park, are within the boreal forest. Biodiversity in the oil sands region has been measured to be about 97% intact. A pristine area untouched by humans is considered 100% intact, a paved urban parking lot is 0% intact. Every dollar invested in the oil sands creates about $9 worth of economic activity; with one third of that economic value generated outside Alberta - in Canada, the U.S. and around
the world. Alberta’s oil sands contain recoverable reserves of 169 billion barrels, the third-largest reserves in the world.
