New Here and First Bowtie Pickup

Postby Gorecki [OP] » Oct 06 2011, 11:57pm

Hello All,

I signed up here a few days ago and didn't post until today. I'm finishing up my second week with a new '11 Silverado 1500. Can't say it's anything special (other than it's mine) but it does have some nice widgets. The Z71 thing, all star edition thing, convience package thing. All and all a nice truck. But I have to say there's something I'm really not happy with, the paint finish! The amount of orange peel they just clear coated right over and moved it down the line is REALLY bad. But after I took it home and went back to look at others, ALL of the 1500 finishes were just as bad, some assembled as recently as May, some back as far as the first of the year! Pretty sure there’s nothing I can do about it so I’ll just whine here. :)

Little background, the whole trip with this truck for me is I’m the grandson of a now deceased Fisher Body 35 year ‘Master Craftsman’ retiree. If I bought a new truck it better be a bowtie, especially not one of those F word things, otherwise, he’d crawl up out of his grave, hunt me down and throw me a beating! But, with that in mind, I think he'd totally lose it if he saw the door panel stick that says '65% US/Canada, 35% Mexico'.

I haven’t had a truck in a while, last one was a Dodge 1500 with a 5.9 and it was a great truck. But for too long I’ve been towing my bike to the race track with my wives Hummer (which I don’t really care for) so I finally got a tow beast that will handle that and up to just under 10K of whatever. I’m still getting the feel for it, haven’t got 1K on it yet.

Oh, my other beef, the stereo sucks! But that’s nothing new...LOL

Anyway, hello! I'm Brian, nice to meet you all. 8-)

WELCOME to the site!
My father in law retired from Fischer Body. He was in the Marion, IN plant. Yes, it's sad that the GM trucks are "less American" than others, but it's the way the world is, I guess. Hope you still enjoy owning a GM Truck!

Thanks all for the welcomes and congrats! I'll be snooping around and poking my nose it where it *might* be helpful. I really don't plan on doing much of anything to my truck for a while. Think I'm going to add step-sides before my wife kills herself trying to get in/out. That's about it. ;)

That's the impression I get, never thought I'd see the day where I couldn't get a Made in USA chevy, but I can get Made in USA BMW's, Nissan's and Toyota's. :|

Guess that's okay, all the bikes I ride are asian because frankly they don't make anything in the US and anything that *says* it is, isn't! :?

welcome & congrats on the new truck, I agree with you on the paint it's ridiculous. & don't drive on the highway & hit a flying beatle...it will chip your paint as if a rock hit it, the paint seams so thin & easy to chip off.

You can thank the EPA and all the Greenies in Washington for that.

Well thanks again for the warm welcomes. Was on the way out today and took a quick pic for the hell of it so I can show my mine as everyone seems to show theres.

EDIT : Well, I won't be posting the photo, getting an upload error at the moment...so will try later.

It's nothing everyone hasn't seen before but, again, it's mine. :D

Decided to go ahead and get the nerf bars ordered today because I'd rather get them and put them on before it gets too cold and my poor wife can get a leg up, cause frankly she's sorta short.

Anyone got any favorite mud flaps or commonly recommended? I'd usually search for that sort of thing but I figured I'd ask while I'm at it.
