Have a 2001 Silverado 1500HD. LT trim with center console.

Has anyone ever removed the cassette tape unit? Who the heck needed a cassette deck in 2001?

I would like to pull mine out and was wondering how hard it is and if anyone makes an insert to fill the hole?
Would be nice to have an additional slot for wallets, CD's, etc.

Thanks everyone, ~easystreet

I recently had mine taken out while a new stereo was being fitted. There are screws located either inside the ashtray or in the pocket below. Unscrew those. the console and pocket are separate. The stealership will have the pocket for the cassette replacement. I believe it was around 28$. I apologize, but I do not have the part number. I did purchase the pocket just a few months ago. They did have to order it. I watched as the gentleman literally slid the pocket in then covered back with the molding. It did not look difficult.

I know this is a huge revive - but in case anyone up-to-date is looking to replace the tape deck on their '99-'01 Silvy's (maybe later styles too?) - I just ordered this from GMDirect:

Part Number: 1595873

It fits perfectly and is super deep - although this is not a photo of mine - it is how it looks. It's also felt-lined so it's nice for keeping 'clinking' around of whatever you might have in there (flashlight and pocket knife with window smasher/seat belt knife is in mine).
