Tried out my 4wd this week on my 2500hd, basically brand new less the 800 miles. Anyways, I am hearing a clicking and whining noise in the front end when I take my foot off the accelerator, sounds like the left side, coming from a 1500 awd denali, this is new to me. Is this normal? Just sound ways load to be normal. Also, the owners manual is pretty vague on 4x operation. Pic have been engaging while stopped. What happens when your on the highway, roads turn slippery. Can yOu engage on the fly? Any help or info would be appreciated. Thanks,,

I was told that you cannot engage the 4wd over 40mph, and seems to be the case.

Engaging 4wd can be done going slower than that. It does whine some, and gurgles a bit when you let off the accelerator, but I've not had clicking.

I've noted that the transmission is pretty tight on these, with a rear locker, and 4wd you have a pretty rugged 4wd system, that doesn't like even the slightest dry pavement.

14denail,

Please read page 9-38 to 9-49 of your owners manual. This will help you when choosing your position under each driving circumstance. Here are a few examples.

To shift from Four-Wheel Drive Low
to Four-Wheel Drive High, AUTO or
Two-Wheel Drive High, the vehicle
must be stopped or moving less
than 5 km/h (3 mph) with the
transmission in N (Neutral) and the
ignition in ON/RUN.

When Four-Wheel Drive Low is
engaged, vehicle speed should be
kept below 72 km/h (45 mph).
Extended high-speed operation in
Four-Wheel Drive Low may damage
or shorten the life of the drivetrain.

Chasmanian,

Yes, for the shifting from two-wheel drive high to four wheel drive dive.

Shifts between Two-Wheel Drive
High and Four-Wheel Drive High
can be made at any vehicle
speed.

This may take moderate force to be applied to the shift lever for a few seconds before the Four-Wheel Drive High can be engaged.
