04 silverado steering gear box leak at adj. nut

Postby kelly1 [OP] » Jan 21 2013, 2:35pm

Hey everyone,

Working on a 2004 silverado z71 with 5.3l.

While changing my plugs last night I noticed my steering gearbox is starting to leak a little right on the very top. It appears to be coming from the adjusting nut for the worm gear clearance. The leak is 'wet' looking and is all around the nut approx 1/2".

I found this odd. Can I do anything to fix this leak short of replacing the gearbox? Seems odd it would leak in this location. All the p/s lines are bone dry. I take pride in a leak-free vehicle.

I've seen a lot of boxes do the same thing. If it is just a bit of seepage, and it is not dripping I would not worry about it. Try cleaning it off and see how long it takes to show back up. That will give you an idea how bad it is leaking. I'm assuming you have not had to add any fluid.

Nope, fluid levels are fine. I will wipe it up and watch it. Thanks!
