07 NNBS K1500 ball joints.. DIY?

07 NNBS K1500 ball joints.. DIY?

Postby TxLTZz71 [OP] » Oct 10 2012, 3:21am

So I leveled my truck for new tires... Went to get aligned and finally found out what all the clunking with slow turns on gravel roads was.. Ball joint on driver side is shot.. Passenger not far behind... NTB wanted 840 to replace both, my mechanic 570... Is this something I could attempt? I am fairly mechanically inclined, yet suspension stupid! LoL

Any tips appreciated!

You should be able to if you have a good set of basic tools, a good floor jack and jack stands. You can get the ball joint press at most parts houses through their loan-a-tool program. I reccomend using "Moog" brand parts if you decide to do it yourself (or if you have it done too).

See that's what I thought, but my mechanic is saying that the whole arm that the balljoint attaches to would need to be replaced in our NNBS trucks... Really wanting to avoid another 500.00 mech bill!

Yep... That's what I have heard from NTB and my mechanic... My mechanic was hoping he could just replace the ball joints also...

Geez they make vehicles harder and harder to work on!

Dude no call Rough country and get a set of Upper control arms and Moog Ball joints for 230 bucks for both sent to your door. They will take direct replacement of your stock ones and they are greasable...even if you didnt have the leveling kit the UCA from RC will work on factory height rides...or with the 3.5" lift.....they are a solid piece and not greasable so when mine go out i will be purchasing a set from there no questions asked

Is this something I could install? My mechanic charged me 140 (reasonable for me) to install struts and doesn't mind if I bring my own parts...

If the ball joints are not replacable then it would be even easier, although more expensive, to replace them. If they come as part of the arm (I know that's how the top ones are, but I think the lowers are replacable) then there is no pressing of the joint necessary. Either way, I always remove the control arm to make it easier to press the ball joint out.

Agreed with aste25...on the 2007.5-current the Upper Ball joint is pressed in and a solid piece to the arm i believe even if you call advanced auto they dont sell just ball joints they sell the arm+pre pressed in ball joint but non greasable...

this is something you could do on your own its a basic install. just take the linkage off of your spindle. mark where the control arm is currently aligned take out the old bolts and remove the control arm, put in the new control arm(with new BJ) and run if included new bolts back through ensuring that the arm is in the same location and angle as the one removed. reattach the arm/ball joint back to the spindle and go get it aligned.

and as aste reccomened before is to get moog ball joints. and has i stated before the Rough country UCA's come with greasable moog ball joints. hope this helps
