Best 4"Suspension Lift?

Postby thirdgen [OP] » Dec 07 2010, 7:27am

Here's the deal. About 10 years ago I owned a 1969 Blazer with a 4" suspension lift and 33" tires. I loved the way it sat, but now I own a 2000 Silverado 1500 Single cab shortbed. It has American Racing 17" wheels on it. I was thinking about going with a leveling kit with Dick Depek Mud Country 33x12.5 R17's. The problem I have with going that route is, I feel that a leveling kit is a cheap, uneffective solution to be able to fit that tire size on my truck. I used to own a S-10 ZR2 and I bought a Superlift 2" suspension lift. It consisted of torsion keys, rear shackles, and front upper control arms. I was able to fit 32x11.50 R15's on it, and they still would rub while off roading, and they wore on the inside of the tire no matter how I had it aligned.
So back to the Blazer theory. I feel that for a 33" tire on a full size chevy, a 4" suspension lift is the best solution. I found this: http://www.rockymountainsusp.com/GM_IFS99.htm and looked at the Rough Country 4" System. Why spend the same on a 4" kit when I could get 6" for the same price? I could fit 35's on a 6" kit, and I want 33's. That's why. I don't want to go big and crazy, I just want to fit 33's and have no alignment issues, or rubbing.
Are there any other kits out there for better prices that may be better setup or better quality? That price is the best I've seen for a suspension lift, anyone have any other sources?

No replies...that sucks. So here's my point of view. There's a pile of posts that go like this: "Torsion Keys". When you read them it's the same thing. "I want to fit 33's on my truck, but don't wanna do a full suspension lift." Translated it says, "I'm way too cheap and don't know how to install a real lift, so I want to squeak by and be dissapointed in the long run."
Here's the deal:
I too was one of the above people, but I came to realize that if I really want to fit 33's on my truck and have no issues and be genuinely happy; it'll take a 4" suspension lift. Therefore, I'm buyin that Rough Country 4" lift kit and doing it right.

I agree. To me it's all about function. If I level it and I take my truck off road and the tires rub all over the place, which they will, then I wasted my $100 on torsion keys. I'll shell out a grand for 4" of lift and do it right, but at the same time, it'll look mean.

You have to remember though..in this ecomony alot of people cant afford alot of things..so they are doing what they can afford. I would love to get a lift on my truck..but 1000 bux vs 100 for torsion keys...only makes sense. You need to be respectful of that.
Crap, my hampster fell off the wheel and it broke its leg.

Yeah you're right, these are hard times. I'm not bustin on what others do, I'm just sayin that that's how I would do it. Either spend the cash or don't do it at all. The 33's I want are $247 a tire, so if I'm spendin $1000 on tires, why would I skimp on my suspension? Plus, for my useage, a leveling kit wouldn't make sense. Everybody's needs are different...

Go with the full lift, torsion keys will make it ride like sh*t. You can also check craigs ect. for some 33. Seems like 33s are a dime a dozen so there should be lots of them around. Just remember its alot cheaper to lift a 69 do to the solid front axel. In peterson 4wheel drive mag there is a company that has complete budget lift for a killer price. I think there adds were white/red or black/yellow and also tire/rim deals also.

If money wasn't an issue I would go with the 4" lift. I have used rancho kits in the past and beat the stuffing out of the parts and had no issues with them at all. I currently have an 02 zr2 and am going to get either a '10 or '11 silverado after the first of the year. I only want to go up to 33's. I have been searching the internet and found some other places that had valuable information on the setup I am looking into. that is 4" and 33's. From what I have found was even with the new keys you are still changing the load on the torsion bars. This equals a rougher ride. So if you are looking to keep a somewhat factory ride I would stay clear of the new keys.
