Front end noise when hitting bumps ????

Postby jteuban [OP] » Nov 23 2011, 10:35pm

Hello, I am new here and I am wondering if anyone can help my with this problem with my truck. It is a 95 silverado, and every time you hit a bump or even on a rough road there is a front end noise like a clunck or rattle. Even over gravel you can hear it. It is rapid, like bruppp, bruppp, bruppp. I cant point out the problem and I dont want to ramdomly replace things that are perfectly good (Im too cheap) Im thinking its a bad ball joint, but play is fine. Is it a bushing somewhere, or a tie rod. there is no wondering, and also at a little higher speeds like 40-45 on a smoother road it is perfect. Also on rough terrian its more evident like a clunck. You cant feel it at the steering wheel either, but you can feel it in the cab. I have no idea. Help

My first guess would be a ball joint but it would be hard to tell without hearing it. You might be able to jack it up and see if you can find anything loose under there, just make sure its on a jack stand before you shake too hard!

Agreed. Check the easy things first- loose lugnuts? Bad hubs? Jack up the truck (securely!) and give things a shake to see what happens. Any loose bolts or fasteners?

How about a bad body bushing? That may be what is causing it since you do not feel it in the steering wheel, but you can feel it in the cab.
