Front Suspension

Postby MARKS02 [OP] » Nov 02 2011, 6:16pm

I have a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4, stock, with around 115k on it. When i turn to the left it seems like it's in 4 wheel drive. I've checked it to see if the 4x4 is locked in and it isn't. I pulled the left front wheel and checked the ball joints, tie rod ends, etc. and didn't see any problems there. Any suggestions?
Thanks

What do you mean it's like it's in 4wd? Does the drivetrain get in a bind when only turning to the left?

To further build upon Jordan's question, what does the truck feel like when it's in 4wd? Does the steering change at all?

Front Suspension

Postby Bonjoscoz71 » Nov 03 2011, 3:17am

As stated already put it in 4wd and see how it feels. I have installed 2 front diff already, one in a 2000 silverado and another in a 99 blazer(same design front diff as a silvy).

I wonder if this could be related to your other post about the rattle in the transmission. You possibly have some problem with your 4X4 system, or even several different problems at the same time.

so none of you guys can tell when your in 4wd? the turning radius becomes limited.

Marks02- sounds like your 4wd is still engaged. i would try cycling the 4wd by shifting into and out of 4wd hi, low, auto, 2wd on a gravel/dirt road to see if that release's it.

Yea, I can tell when my truck is in 4WD. His OP said it only did it while turning left. My truck binds in both directions while in 4WD and turning (just like evey one I've ever had does in 4WD, due to the design). He has had several other posts concerning other symptoms as well. They may all be related, but then again they may not be related at all. We are trying to get more information from him, since the truck is not available to us to see/drive and inspect to determine what the problem may be.

ASTE25: It feels like it binds up when turning sharply to the left, especially on gravel. You can also feel it on pavement. Not so much as when it is locked in 4WD but a similar feeling.
starspangled6.0: You can definately tell when it's locked in 4WD, especially turning the wheel in both directions. It doesn't feel as though anything is wrong when locked in 4WD.
Bonjoscoz71: See last reply.
AST25: This is my first post, so I'm not sure who posted the problem with the rattle in the transmission or other problems.
Adams99Z71: I've taken it in and out of 4WD and it seems like it's engaging and disengaging ok.

All: I really appreciate the posts. This is my first time on this forum and I'm thankful for the replies. Since my last post I've checked out all of the steering and suspension components and could find nothing worn out or loose. I looked at the front axles but since none of the boots are busted or ripped, I can't tell if sometthing is wrong. I'm going to check the all of the u-joints next. I may have to wait until the condition worsens enough to see what's wrong. Thanks again everyone!

Well, good luck. I guess I confused your post with someone's who replied to you and though you had a couple posts. I don't know what could possibly cause the symptoms you are having, without it affecting both sides. Let us know what it is if you find out.
