Hard to turn

Power Steering going out?

Hard to turn

Postby koolz71 [OP] » Jan 20 2011, 6:49pm

OK i have had this issue since last year when i bought the truck..if turn the wheel very sharp, put in reverse, and turn the other way..or just sharply turn and try to drive the wheel will lock up on me and it acts like it has no power steering at all. It only does it at those times. The fluid looks good, and its full..has anyone ever had anything like this happen..and the RPMs drop way down at the same time as well
Crap, my hampster fell off the wheel and it broke its leg.

My truck does the same to me at random times, not just in reverse. I have never payed attention to rpms when it's doing it though. I've also heard other owners havin this problem but no one ever suggests anything useful. I was thinkin about gettin it looked at just yesterday actually. Interesting to see what others have to say..........

koolz71 did you take your truck in? I am having the same issue...took my truck in last week and I could not duplicate my issue. They basically acted as if i were crazy.

If you did take your truck in did they find anything?
Thank you

Sounds like a design issue or an adjustment needed - the steering is going beyond the limit of the hydraulic assist, and when it gets there, the hydraulic fluid can't act on the hydraulic cylinder. That would put a strain on the pump, and could cause the RPMs to drop.
If you want to do what you want to do, you have to do what you have to do.

I had this issue too with my 07.5 Silv
I would steer it to the end and it would virtually lock there, and would return on it's own unless I pulled it back. Then it would start to return to centre on it's own.

I took it in and they replaced the pump with an upgrade... Days went by and still have steering issues with failing power assist and hesitation in the wheel while turning. Dealership then replaced the PS gear box.

Steering is good now.

They definitely went with the lower cost item first - but those symptoms cannot be the pump. Hydraulic cylinder issue or steering gear gone past its point of mechanical advantage - either one would lock it up.
If you want to do what you want to do, you have to do what you have to do.
