Intermediate steering shaft offical recall

Was there ever an official recall on the shaft?

Intermediate steering shaft offical recall

Postby a metzgar [OP] » Mar 30 2011, 4:12pm

I have had my truck back to the dealer several times over the intermediate steering shaft and was told their fix was a lube kit installation instead of replacing the shaft, and that works for a while. Was there ever an official recall on that item? If not how do I go about servicing this myself?

I have yet to do it myself, but my friend works as a parts guy at Chevy dealership and he said you can just buy the lube kit yourself at the dealership and take care of it as necessary. I don't believe there was ever an official recall on the problem.

Never was a recall. A newer design shaft is available from GM. I do not know if the aftermarket has this part yet. Be sure the steering wheel is locked when you remove the shaft so you do not damage the clock spring wire harness for the air bag.

Stupid question; Is my steering wheel suppose to lock when the truck is in park or do you have to lock it yourself?

If it doesn't have a lock, be sure it cannot turn.

Thanks Gordon! My 1991 K2500 locked, I thought it was strange that my 2003 doesn't lock.

03 does not lock, neither does my 07 Yukon. As far as the shaft, I had the new design installed when it came out years ago (it was warranted by GM). Noise returned within a year. What I do is disconnect the lower bolt (in the engine compartment) and actuate the shaft by hand, full travel, about 6-8 times. Reconnect the bolt, good to go until next time, usually a year or so.
