So recently the Silverado developed a light popping in the left front part of the truck. It only happens when I'm raising the plow, or stacking snow (which puts a ton of pressure on the front end and plow). Any ideas? Sometimes I can feel it through the floorboard... sometimes I'll stack a mountain of snow and it won't make a sound. It's almost like something is grinding or binding, and then suddenly releasing. I'm almost certain it's the left front suspension, since I can hear\feel it from that side; unless there's a crack in the plow mount somewhere
I know nothing about snow plows so if you can eliminate the plow or mounts as to the problem. My friend owned a d-max while back, he had similar sound ended up being wheel bearings. I'm guessing your using 4wd when plowing snow and with the combined weight and stress of the plow, I would start by looking at wheel bearings or cv joints. Hope this helps.
I'll take a more detailed look at it in a couple of days... I doubt it's a wheel bearing, since it only happens when the plow is raising or lowering. There's no noise or other issues during other truck use (pushing snow, city or freeway driving, hitting bumps, etc). It also happens in 2wd and 4wd.
I hear how ya'll talk about how much those plows weigh, then move on to checking your ball joints they can make that kind of sound when you put that much pressure on front of truck. Watched one of your plowing videos recently looked like ton of weight and pressure when plow was going up. If ball joints are worn they can they can make popping noise. The added weight and pressure when plowing and pushing snow can add enough stress to them to only make sound when the plow is in use. Like an early warning they're going bad. This is just something else to check or eliminate .
Put the plow on yesterday, and I had someone stand next to the left front and listen for any noises when I raised and lowered it. Didn't hear anything. Big storm coming in 2 days from now, so I'll see if it will do it while stacking snow. Maybe there was just some ice built up somewhere?
Alright, it's still popping. The weird thing was, it wasn't popping when I began plowing at 5:30 AM, but as the day wore on, it progressively went back to popping almost every time I'd stack snow. We took a video of it, and you can hear it on the 2nd pass. EKinMN is suggesting soaking the torsion bar setup in PB blaster, since it sounds like something is binding. Ideas?
