Power Steering issue

Postby katieflynn918 [OP] » Oct 01 2011, 11:08am

I've got my hubby's truck-he is in a-stan. Anyway, I notice the steering was a little tough when I would turn it really sharp. (like for parking in effing hawaii) I thought maybe it needed power steering fluid so i bought some at napa, when I looked at the existing fluid it was thick and dark. Im pretty sure it shouldnt look like that and it probably needs changed. ive been googeling and youtubing some stuff and Ive got some of an idea of what I need to do, but just disconnecting that hose sounds like I can make a huge mess. (im a messy person anyway) any suggestions?

What I have always done is to use a turkey baster or some kind of suction device. Suck as much fluid out of the reservoir as possible, then refill. Drive it for a few days, and repeat. Do it frequently for a while, and you'll have most of the fluid changed. Otherwise, if you want it flushed, leave it to a pro.

Katie, we have not heard back from you. Did you try this, and is the truck steering any better now?

Anyone else have any better ideas to change out the power steering fluid? I'd love to see one of mechanics chime in on the "right" way to do it.
