Power Steering

Postby rdgibbons [OP] » Jul 13 2011, 7:10pm

Well gang 1st time user here so I'm not sure if this is the right forum. I did not see one for the steering so here goes. My steering is making a terrible humming noise and has been doing so for a while especially turning to the left. It wasn't humming at all turning to the right but it has started doing that also. Now my steering seems to be getting tighter too. I've checked all the fluids and even added some Lucas Power steering fluid about 30,000 miles ago. I'm quite frustrated with it but I don't wanna pay an arm and a leg to have somebody else do it if I can do it myself. I do think the ball joints and tie rod ends need replaced but that wont cure the humming.

First, have it flushed...there may be air trapped in the lines.
Also, it is possible that you have a bad steering rack. I do not recall if your model year had the TSB or recall, but it's possible.

I think there was a GM service bulletin out about noisy power steering pumps. They did not want to replace the pumps so they recomended replacing the fluid with synthetic to quiet them down. I think you are going to end up replacing it though.

I USED to have access to the website for GM service bulletins, but it has been years since I used it and I don't remember the site or the password now. I sent out a couple of emails to some of my old co-workers to see if they still had access. I did find the bulletin number if someone can track it.
This is what I found...

Document ID# 1875699
2006 Chevrolet Chevy K Silverado - 4WD
Subject:Power Steering Whine Noise - keywords fluid gear hose idle pump turn #PIT4208 - (12/04/2006)
Models:2003-2007 Cadillac Escalade, ESV, EXT

2003-2007 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Silverado Classic, Suburban, Tahoe

2003-2007 GMC Sierra, Yukon, Yukon Denali, Yukon XL, Yukon XL Denali

2003-2007 Hummer H2

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
Some owners may comment on a power steering pump whine noise. This whine noise is most commonly heard between idle and 2000 rpm coming from the power steering pump.

Recommendation/Instructions:
Reports of flushing and refilling the power steering system with Valvoline SynPower Power Steering Fluid have reduced or eliminated this noise. Valvoline SynPower Power Steering Fluid is a synthetic fluid and is available at most auto parts stores in quart size containers. In most case 3 or 4 quarts will be needed to flush and fill the system.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
