shaking like crazy at 40 MPH

Postby Hausfire28 [OP] » Jan 24 2012, 9:49pm

My son has a 1997 Silverado K 1500 4 inch Rancho Lift with 33 tires 12.5 wide.

The front end shakes alot at 40 plus MPH I jacked up the control arms and shook the tire side to side and top to bottom . Top and bottom were fine and side to side had about 1/2 of play each way which i didn't think was alot. I am not sure what it could be? Suspension is not my thing. I can do the work but not good at diagnosing. Please help. Thanks

I'll bet either the idler arm or the pitman arm is worn out.

Could be wheel bearings or tie rod ends. My truck is doing the same thing and thats what is wrong with it.

A wheel bearing is easy to diagnose, i have a vid on youtube for it, just jack the wheel up and spin it, should be noise free, no grinding! Ide recommend taking it to alignment shop, they will find the bad part quickly, plus u prally need alignment and maybe a balance!

I hope it's something as simple as that and not the driveshaft!

Take it to a dealer or midas or someone and have an inspection done asap. If it were me, I'd have it towed there just as a precaution.

You are sure the tires are balanced, right?

I'm with this. I would start here with the least expensive solution unless you are sure the tires are balanced correctly. Sometimes if not balanced correctly tires of this size can shake the front end pretty heavily. Can you feel the shaking in the steering wheel?

That is what I was thinking when he said 1/2 in of play. I would think there wouldn't be enough play to tell if any at all.

Not sure how new your tires are or if they are this kind but when I had my 33" Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac's they made my steering wheel shake like crazy just between 35-45 mph.
