Straight axle swap

Postby Chasmanian [OP] » May 09 2011, 6:21am

Any one seen a straight axle swap on a new body truck 07/11?
I know it's been done on some of the older years just haven't seen it on a newer truck.

I've read about people swapping out complete axles from the NBS into the older trucks to get ahold of the Eaton locker diff. What are you looking for? Your original axle broke?
Marine because.

Thinking about putting old school straight axle under the front since no one makes a true locker for the 1500 Sierra IFS

Wow, that would be a total re-engineering of the frons end. Sounds way pricey.

do the 2500s have a strait axle? Probably be cheaper to trade your 1500 in on one. wasn't there another post saying it would be around $5000

No, all the GM's have IFS now. That was just a pick of a truck with the swap.

Still looking into the kits and parts to do it. I have a friend with a shop that will gladly hook me up with the shop time.

Only down side is I don't think you get to keep your ABS. Still doing research to know for sure.

bringin back an old thread!

so did you ever do it? i was talking to my buddies today about how awesome my truck would be if it was sased. from the intel ive gathered from the interwebz you can do it on a 3/4 or one ton gmc/chevrolet using a front dodge AAM axle (basically a dana 60) because the speed sensors are the same.

but for a half ton i would expect it to be the same. i can get an AAM front axle and a AAM 11.5 rear with 4.10s for $1000 right now (money i dont care to spend). and it seems that the only problem people are having is the steering. 07-current gmc/chevrolet have rack and pinion and youd either need to go full hydro, hydro assist or crossover. basically fab up a little ram from a NEW steering box (dont no if you need a 2wd or 4wd, or another brand).

if i did it, id try and keep it as low as i could. 35s would probably do it for me...i have bad knees. i wonder if youd need to chop anything like the oil pan. and id do a long arm 3 link, use the AAM link tabs that are already on the axle. with a 14b full floater in the rear with discs.........oooooooh how i want disc brakes so bad

anyways, if youve done it....please elaborate on how you did it, answer some of those questions i posted, that would be awesome

and pictures are always awesome
