The towing package...not to be confused with the HD Towing package (which comes with different rear shocks and (i think) stronger leaf springs...Two different things. Anyway the regular towing package gives your transmission extra cooling which allows you to pull up to 9500 pounds with the crew cab 4x4 3.42 gears. You are actually rated to tow 100 pounds MORE then the 6.2l with the same gearing. So yes, you can buy a hitch and install it on your vehicle and be able to tow but the amount you can tow will not be near the same amount as having the factory "tow packages" put on your truck. So depending on what you want to tow is how you should proceed.

Sorry, I have the 6.2l on the brain lately :D

I originally had a 1999 Silverado and the factory receiver was junk. It was designed so that the bumper would take some of the up/down load which really didn't work. Whenever I would hit bumpy roads the receiver would flex so much that it wouldn't overcome the bounce or what the trailer folks call "porpoising". I ended up installing a 2" Putnam XDR class V receiver knowing that I would never use it to it's full potential. Removing the old receiver and installing the new one took less than an hour with no drilling required. The advantage of this receiver is that it just doesn't flex. I liked it so well that when I bought my 2009 Silverado, I found it it would fit that truck too so I removed it from the 99 and put it on the 09.

Putnam is now out of business but Curt Manufacturing now uses Putnam's XDR design. For most 1500s since 1999, the Curt 15522 is worth looking into.

Here is how it looked on my 1999. Of course you don't need the electrical connector on the newer trucks since the factory one is in the bumper.
