Bumper mounted receiver hitch?

Postby robytar [OP] » Sep 18 2011, 9:47pm

Hello first post, first question. I have an 02 Silverado that came with no trailer hitch other than the standard place to put a ball in bumper. I wanted to install a low cost receiver type hitch that bolts to the bumper to tow my 1000lb trailer. I found several but it appears that there are only two pre-tapped bolt holes to mount it. I know for around $120.00 I could get a full frame mounted Curt hitch but for my small trailer I think a bumper mounted hitch should be fine and at a much lower cost. Any suggestions on a decent bumper hitch & how many bolts actually hold the hitch to the bumper?

Thanks for any input!

yeah but what if you get a bigger trailer? or a friend wants you to help them move? or if you need to stand on the bumper for any reason the ball is always in the way, or your constantly taking ti on and off. not to mention the bumper sag that will come over time. you're only as strong as your weakest link. personally I'm not a fan of a bumper mounted ball, or hitch.

For the amount you are wanting to tow, the bumper mounted receiver will be fine, but you will have to take the ball out as there isn't room for both.

I gotta agree with shinyblind- sure, you'll get by with a bumper hitch, but using it is a shortcut. I don't know if anyone should cut corners while towing... just my two cents...
