Factory trailer brake control

Factory trailer brake control

Postby chilis650 [OP] » Jul 14 2012, 4:01am

I have a 2008 Chevy 2500 with the integrated brake controller built in. Periodically mainly after it rains I'll get a "service trailer brake control" indication on the DIC. This has happened with or without a trailer hooked up and when I am towing a trailer the brakes do not work. If anyone has any ideas on what the problem might be, would be much helpful. Thank ya'll.

Sounds like water getting into wiring someplace. I'd be crawling around underneath and inspecting all of the wiring and connectors, starting with the trailer connector if it were me.

+1, check the connector and then follow the wiring back. Water is grounding something. I picked up some dielectric grease and filled all the connectors on my truck to keep this stuff from happening. Happy hunting.

Do you have an ABS message or warning light on aswell? If you have a fault in the brake system, the trailer brakes are disabled too. This is what i hate on the built in trailer brakes. You should get the code checked that is set, otherwise you don't have any direction where to start.

+1 on wiring. Had the same thing happen on my 08 Dmax 3500. After they put a new brake controller on, a new wiring terminal at the rear bumper etc, and it was still giving me that DIC message, the dealer discovered that when the 5th wheel was installed, someone had nicked the wiring bundle.

It was in a bad spot and they had to drop the fuel tank to replace it, but that solved the issue.

Gotta be water getting in somewhere.
