How much can I tow

Postby timmer [OP] » Jun 12 2012, 3:36am

First post to this site. I currenetly own a 2008 Dodge 6.7 diesel and am looking at getting back into a halfton truck as I am finding the3/4 to too expensive. Typically I run a small electrical business and my truck is my daily driver, more truck than I need. Here's the catch, we have a Denali 312 bunkhouse camper that weighs in at 8300 lbs empty, we do not haul it very often or very far. I just feel the expense of my 3/4 ton truck is too much for the 20 days or so a year I haul my camper...bring on the advice/feedback please. I have a new 2012 Sierra extended cab all picked out c/w tow package and a 6 speed 5.3... will it do the job for me? i feel that I will save a lot of money in fuel and other bills....HELP me pull the trigger on my new Sierra :) Thanks Timmer

I went to the link and it worked for me so I copied and pasted the information for you.
Vortec 5.3L VVT V8 2WD Vortec 5.3L VVT V8 4WD
Trailering & Payload
Curb Weight (lbs.) 5,045 5,206
Max Payload (lbs.) 1,755 1,794
GVWR (lbs.) 6,800 7,000
Max Conventional Trailering, 3.08 Rear Axle (lbs.) 6,900 6,800
Max Conventional Trailering, 3.23 Rear Axle (lbs.) N/A N/A
Max Conventional Trailering, 3.42 Rear Axle (lbs.) 9,700 9,600
Max 5th Wheel Trailering, 3.42 Rear Axle (lbs.) 9,400 9,600
Max Conventional Trailering, 3.73 Rear Axle (lbs.) N/A N/A
Max 5th Wheel Trailering, 3.73 Rear Axle (lbs.) N/A N/A
GCWR, 3.08 Rear Axle (lbs.) 12,200 12,200
GCWR, 3.23 Rear Axle (lbs.) N/A N/A
GCWR, 3.42 Rear Axle (lbs.) 15,000 15,000
GCWR, 3.73 Rear Axle (lbs.) N/A N/A
Spring & Axle Capacity
Front Gross Axle Weight Rating (lbs.) 3,600 3,950
Front Spring (lbs.) 3,600 3,950
Rear Gross Axle Weight Rating (lbs.) 3,950 3,950
Rear Spring (lbs.) 3,950 3,950
So for 3.08 rear axle gearing its 6900
and 3.42 its 9700 lbs
So I think it would be right at its limits pulling your trailer if that's the dry weight, once you add propane and all the other stuff we carry it would be doing a lot of laboring.
So check your rear axle gearing and go from there. I hope this helps

I'd think your diesel would get better gas mileage, unless you haven't tuned it. As long as you get the 5.3 with either 3.42 or 3.73 gearing, you should be fine since you only want to tow the trailer on a few occasions. When you buy it, get the dealer to install tow mirrors for you.

Not getting great mileage with my diesel and it costs more here in Canada... Add the extra wear and tear, cost of the 3/4 ton, I think I could stand to save quite a bit plus have a nice comfy daily driver that's able to pull my camper when required. I am hearing 5.3's with 6 speeds are getting mpg's in the 20's
I know that will drop towing, my diesel gets around 17mpg on a good day, worse when towing... Thanks for the help and info... I agree living on the edge, not towing a lot though :)

I will be very honest with you-you will not be happy going from a diesel to a gas motor if you have to tow. If your at 8,300 pounds dry/empty, then add another 700 pounds for gear, water, etc., and you have a heavy trailer for a half-ton.

I am assuming your tongue weight is probably over 1,000 pounds. I couldn't tell you to buy a half-ton.

I have to disagree slightly with you, having come from a 2009 Duramax/Allison to a 2011 Silverado with the NHT Tow package. My TT weighs in at about 7500 loaded and is no problem towing at 65 mph up and over some decent grades. I recently added the cam sway control to my WD hitch and that made a big difference as there were some decent crosswinds yesterday.

I think it all depends on the terrain and how far you're towing. If you're towing in very steep terrain/mountains or for long distances, you'll need a 3/4 ton. If you only tow a few times a year or shorter distances, you may be OK with the NHT package or maybe even a properly equipped 5.3.

Thanks for all the input and advice guys...appreciated :-)
I got my GMC Sierra extended cab 5.3 Z71... C/W all equipment for towing. Very happy with it so far. I will be towing out camper from New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island for the country music festival. It's about a 4 hour drive, not real hilly. That will be our longest trip hauling this summer. I hope we make it, don't wanna miss Alabama!!! Lots of other shows too, gonns be a great time!!! :-)
