Quick update:

I'm pretty confident I've beaten the overheating issue- I was just driving with the plow too high, so it was blocking the poor engine. With the plow lowered, I haven't had any issues. Plus, I just got some AMSOIL coolant boost in the mail today, which should make a big difference, too.

I contacted BOSS about the rotten dealership. They also apologized, and told me they forwarded my message on to Crysteel. Haven't heard back from Crysteel yet... I don't expect to, either.

Oh, and I discovered yesterday that my grill was popped out of place. I'm guessing they had to do it so they could either put the mount on, or run the wiring; but it would be really nice if they took the time to put it back on correctly .

Hurray! Crysteel actually did something right- they shipped me my Timbren springs! Too bad I haven't had any time to put them on... plowing season starts in about 5 hours :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D. A nice 2-3" snow is falling as I type. Can you tell I'm excited?

Re: New Boss 8'2" V-XT Plow!

Postby starspangled6.0 [OP] » Nov 20 2011, 5:07pm

Someday, I'll have to take a video when I do an alley. Those are a lot of fun. I've also noticed YouTube has a vast deficiency when it comes to plowing "how-to" videos... maybe I can fix that.

Well boyz, we had a perfect first storm last night. 2-3" of snow, about 28-30* outside, so not too cold, not too warm. The snow was a little heavy, but that only mattered to the guy I hired to help shovel :D. We started plowing at 5:00 P.M, and ended at 2:00 A.M. Crunching the numbers, I made more $$ last night, working less hours, than I would have on a typical day of lawn mowing. That's something I didn't expect- people always talk about how plowing isn't a very good way of making money (unless it doesn't snow ). Now, on to the review:

The plow was absolutely in a class of it's own last night. 95% of my competition had straight blades; the versatility of having a V-blade really stood out to me last night. Sure, I could've gotten by on a straight blade, but seeing the speed of the V-blade last night, I know for certain we would have been out there a lot longer, if we had just a straight blade. Tight spots? No problem- just angle the plow so it's smaller. Tight alleys? Just tuck the plow in close to the truck, and you're fine.
The plow scraped right down to the pavement, every time. Using the float feature, I had no problems clearing bumpy alleys, rounded driveways, or dealing with curbs. Even when backdragging, it still locked down on the pavement, and really helped get the job done faster. I did smack into a couple of curbs and a manhole cover (who on earth installed it 3" above ground, right next to a driveway???), but the plow just tripped forward, and kept on scraping.
I was a little concerned that the 8'2" length would be too small for some jobs, but I never had that problem. In fact, the plow was in the "just right" category, especially when we had to plow driveways that were really small. Even the lights, that I thought were way too dim, really worked well. BOSS has a perfect plow on their hands, I'd say. And, from banging it around last night, I know this thing is going to last for years and years. The only thing that sucked was that a lot of ice and snow got stuck on the plow, but that's what I get for getting a steel plow. Poly plows are supposed to be a lot slicker (and more expensive). BOSS does make a poly version of my plow, so that's always an option for my next truck :D.

The thing I was most proud of was my truck :D. Not one complaint, not one groan, not one flashing light on the dash. I was just amazed at how rock-solid it was. The transmission never once got too warm, even in 4WD, plowing alleys, or with the constant backing up\plowing forward in driveways. Three cheers for AMSOIL!
The frame\suspension was even more solid than I had hoped. Certainly, if anything breaks, it's going to be the plow. The truck feels bulletproof when plowing. Even the 6.0 was in a league of it's own last night- never lacking power when pushing snow. And the tires? Wow. Sooooo much grip, even in 2WD. I did a lot of plowing in 2WD, just because it's easier to steer. And remember, there's 900 LBS. of weight on the front end, so the back has a lot less grip, especially when the plow is scraping hard on the ground. Since all the city crews were asleep when the storm hit , there was ice everywhere on the roads. No problem for my new Michelins! And when the G80 rear diff couldn't handle the ice, I just popped it in 4WD, and it felt like we were on sticky blacktop again.

I think, just maybe, that this truck and plow combo was a match made in heaven :D. There was such a great feeling, plowing all that snow last night. The last thing I need is an under-performing setup... I didn't expect such great things from my equipment last night. Heck, even my employee was shoveling snow like an all-star! Can't wait for the next storm!
