noise when towing

noise when towing

Postby SilveradoHorseshoer [OP] » Nov 17 2011, 1:11am

Not sure if this is the right forum for this issue but I only experience the problem when I'm towing
When I tow my trailer for a few hours I hear what sounds like air escaping by my driver side rear wheel well.
Obviously at first I thought it was a leak in my tire but this started a few weeks ago and my tire pressure had been steady. My other thought was an exhaust leak but again it only happens after towing for a few hours. My trailer is pretty light. Any thoughts?
I have a 03 5.3 rwd. Thanks

My only thought would be you're hearing a wind noise. These can be really hard to nail down, and can make all sorts of sounds. When my plow is on, I hear a lot of hi-pitched squealing; when my door doesn't close right, it sounds like a hurricane .
Check the wheel well for any loose body molding; maybe your hubcap is loose? Hope this helps...

OK. Any problems with your brakes (regular or parking brake)?

Have you checked your spare tire recently? That or shocks? Only thing I can think of that would sound like air leaking

I know this is a long shot, but could it be the freon making noise in the evaporator core when the compressor is cycled off? That's about the only thing I can think of, unless it is overheating and coolant is boiling over. Need more information to make a better guess.

Thanks Star Spangled.

Country, thanks I will check the shocks. That does make some sense because like I said this only happens when I'm towing and furthermore after a few hours. In other words when I first hook up: no noise. When I'm through with my day and I'm unhooking is when I hear the noise.

My trailer is pretty light (around 3000 lbs fully loaded) and further more its dual axle and designed to be pretty balanced. I estimate the tongue weight is no more than 200 lbs. I know my truck's max payload is 1645 lbs. Anyone have any idea what the tongue weight capacity is?

Thanks, I'm trying to get some sort of idea what it might be before I take it to the mechanic.
