Tow/Haul Mode is this normal?

Funny feeling when using tow/haul mode

Tow/Haul Mode is this normal?

Postby Salsa [OP] » May 30 2011, 4:08pm

First time I have a vehicle with the Tow/Haul Mode on it. I have a 2011 Sierra SLT Crewcab.

Last week, I hooked up my RV (travel trailer 28ft, 4700lbs empty) for a drive to the dealer for some quick spring maintenance. I clicked the tow/haul mode on thinking, this will be better for the road....

WOW.... ok to get out of the yard, it was great, but when I got on the road, the RPM went up to 3000 between gear changes... but although I had lots of power and torque for the initial launch, it was brutal afterwards!!! The truck was sluggish and I felt like it was held back..

So I took the tow/haul mode off... Then everything was smooth and nice, the truck didn't seem to be under load at all.

So my questions:
- Should I use the Tow/Haul Mode when driving my RV around?
- Is it because my RV is "light" compared to the towing capacity that I got that feeling? And by such the Tow/Haul is not needed for my RV?
- Is there a problem driving the RV on the regular tranny mode and using the 5th and 6th OD gears?

I've only used my tow/haul mode once pulling my car trailer with 2 pallets of potting soil.Everything was smooth as silk. Now,it does stretch out the shift points but even that was very smooth. You might want to talk to a service rep at your dealership.

Will do because I have to bring it in tomorrow for something to get replaced.

I have that Tow/Haul thing to have checked as well as the brakes, when stopped in traffic, if I ease the pressure on the brake pedal just enough to let the truck roll slowly, I get the truck bumping/jumping up and down... first time I have this with a vehicle

I have had Tow Haul for 15 years, and have found this. FIRST read your book that came with the vehicle. Ask the dealers mechanic or service manage,,NOT THE SALES MAN!
Then when you are hooked up to a trailer or have a heavy load in the box. The tow haul should be only applied when starting out. Put it in drive gear, press the button the light will come on. then go. If you are in traffic you will have stiffer shifting.
On hills it is designed to NOT let the transmission go into the overdrive position AND WILL rev very high. Do not let the tach, (if you have one) go over 2800. and keep your speed on hills down to that tach revs.
If you need to on bad hills shift down to the next lower gear and keep your revs to 2800 or below.
Bout as far as I will go with that one folks. Over 150,000 towing and had no problems yet.
Remember IF you tow a lot do your transmission oil services sooner than later.
Cheers

Thanks Old Guy

Have read my owner's manual...found it weird that it didn't provide more info on the Tow/Haul mode

That's what I was leaning for...using it in start up, not regular driving...

One thing I can't remember seeing in the manual, can you press the tow button at any point, time and speed?

You can hit the button anytime, anywhere. Like Old Guy said, it's really helpful when starting out, or on hills. I'm pretty certain you can't break anything by using Tow\Haul mode.
