Towing capacity for 6.2 and 5.3

Towing capacity for 6.2 and 5.3

Postby AFRIC [OP] » Jun 01 2013, 4:37pm

I'll be the first to admit I don't know jack about vehicles. What I'm trying to understand; is how an engine with 88 less HP and 82 less pounds of Torque can pull the same amount? I would think the bigger engine would be able to tow more.

Spec's on the 2 truck as there can be many different combos. Cab size, bed size, rear ratios, 4x4, 4x2, cooling?

uh.... open your mind up a bit. HP is not everything in this game. you have tunnel vision on. talk about the two having the same frame, brakes, weight, etc and its clear to see why they are the same. that being said up a hill the 6.2 will crush a 5.3 any day of the week. there is no doubt that if you do a lot of towing and need to be confident that you can tow something....... get a 2500 lol. jk the 6.2 is what you want. (or really a 2500)

the big contributor is weight a 6.2 doesnt weight a lot more than a 5.3 and you dont want to be pulling something that is 2-2.5 the weight of the truck. i dont care if it has 4w disks... if it doesnt have the weight the trailer will push the truck around.

I fill pretty confident with the 6.2L pulling what I have. My trailer is 6,600 lbs empty. I don't foresee me pulling much more then 7,500lbs. I just couldn't wrap my head around how the smaller engine on the exact same vehicle can pull the same amount of weight

This is easy. It doesn't matter how fast you can get to 60 with a trailer. It's how fast you can get to ZERO. They have the same braking systems.

Same if you didn't get max trailering for the 6.2 but I can say that the 5.3 11 z71 I had ain't got nothing on braking that my max trailering 6.2 has with 4 wheel disks brakes. Next time I hook to my camper I'll show you a 6.2 towing a trailer that's a little over 12,000 lbs! You won't hook no trailer that heavy to a 5.3 and be comfortable towing it around the country.

There is so much miss information on how these are all calculated. Towing capacity isn't really equal from a half ton to a 3/4 ton. There are three figures you have to consider, towing capacity, gross vehicle weight, and payload. With most half tons, if you are at towing capacity and then fill the truck with four buddies and there luggage your over the payload. If you fill your trailer with a weeks worth of goods and the family and bikes in the truck you may be over the gross weight.

Can a half ton pull it, yea. If I'm trying to stop a 6000 trailer on the highway with a blown tire, the half ton is getting rolled. A 2500 has bigger engine and tranny and frame and suspension and brakes and steering....just a safer vehicle for the size of most travel trailers these days.

Actually the brakes are different on these truck having the 6.2L in them as is the rear axle. As for the frames being the same, they are but so is the frame on the news trucks too and those are rated even higher.

IMO the 5.3L is the more popular engine sold so it would be smart for GM to rate the towing capacity up on it, to be more competitive. That's not saying it can't handle towing specs, I'm sure it can handle more that whet it is rated for. The 6.2L motor will tow circles around the 5.3l motor :P

It used to be that the 2500HD shared a frame with the 3500 and the 2500 had the same frame as a 1500. Not sure if that still stands but my uncles 2500HD def has a beefier frame then my 1500 side by side and thats an 09 and a 10.
