Destroyed Rear Differential

1500 Z71 G80 Rear End went Ka Boom

Postby EchoTwoFour [OP] » Dec 30 2010, 5:03am

I managed to destroy the G80 Rear End in my 2000 1500 Seirra Z71 with a minor burnout last weekend and My mechanic says that a used replacement is $1000. Similiar rear ends are going for 700-1000 on ebay so have accepted that fact that 1000 isnt terrible for the convenience of having it tomorrow. My question is will a Tahoe/Yukon/Suburban rear fit just the same? I really dont care about the G80 locker since they are notorious for grenading when abused. Would a 2500/3500 upgrade be an easy fit? I figure why not pay a little extra for a stronger rear if the labor will be about the same. I dont really care about the lug difference if it means that I will have a much stronger rear.

Thanks,

Swapping the entire axle is a costly option, unless you stick with the 10-bolt. If you can find a not-damaged one, same ratio as yours, same spring spacing and brake type, but not G80, that would be best. Those go for around $170 around here. Then get a LockRight, and you're all set, for under $800.

Eaton also sells an electric locker. I've seen prices around $700.

Did you blow the whole rear end up or just the locker?

Get a Detroit Tru Trac and don't look back. A little over $500 and it is a very solid locker. The factory G80 is notorious for doing this and a Tru Trac is an awesome replacement.
