2000 5.3L Silverado Axle & Transfer Case Fluid?

Should they be changed?

2000 5.3L Silverado Axle & Transfer Case Fluid?

Postby tennisjon2002 [OP] » May 08 2011, 6:42pm

I just got a 2000 5.3L Silverado and looking through the maintenance records not much has been done. I just changed the fuel filter and had the transmission fluid filter changed.

Now I am looking at axle and transfer case fluids. I don't see a recommended change interval in the manual? Do these need to be done? And what are the capacities?

Welcome to the site.
What is mileage on the truck? Not that it matters that much. If the axles and transfer case have never been done....it's time, regardless of mileage. I bet that axle lube is going to be pretty skunky!

Mileage is 75K Miles. It looked like fluid had been added and checked overtime, but never drained and filled.
Just don't understand why it is not listed in the maintenance schedule. I am used to Hondas and I know they are usually 30k miles

And how many quarts of each do I need?

I would change it! I've heard that gm put the wrong fluid in right from the start. That could be why it gets so gunky so quick. :o
