2011 silverado 6 speed auto, why no OD kill switch?

Postby ClownShoes [OP] » Jan 24 2012, 6:44pm

Hey Guys, does the 6 speed trans on the 2011 silverado have an Over drive Kill switch? I had this on my 97 Dodge, and I really miss that. I live in a mountainous area and I need to go up and down the mountain everyday for work. The truck is always shifting between 4th and 5th going uphill. It really gets annoying for sure. I just started using the manual setting and put it in 4th as the top gear until I crest the mountain. Only thing that sucks about that is AFM will not kick in on the descent. Any work around for that? BTW, the truck has 1700 miles on it yet. The trans always has a hard 1st to 2nd shift too, but I was told its an adaptive transmission and needs to learn my habits.

Thanks

I can only assume the AFM doesn't kick in go downhill for braking performance in regards to the motor/tranny helping the truck slow down, especially in tow haul mode.

You already know about the manual mode, to the best of my knowledge that is the only way to lock out overdrive. Usually, it's the "2to3" shift people complain about. Give it some miles to break in. It's not the smoothest powertrain around, that's for sure.

The only other thing I can think of is to push the "Tow/Haul" button on the end of the shift lever. That will lock the tranny out of 6th, but may cause longer gear holds on the flip side...I've never experimented with Tow/Haul when I'm not towing anything - it's possible the tranny can sense the amount of weight you're towing and adjust shifts from there. If that's the case, and you're not towing anything, the trans may shift just like normal.

Well, I am told that the truck will act better by 3000 miles. That will be soon enough. I think they build these trannies somewhere flat. The truck is great on a level but climbing windy hills it just doesn't know what gear it wants. Next truck will be a stick.

I pushed the Tow/Haul button on the end of the shifter the other day - unfortunately it did hold gear shifts longer...as if I was pulling a trailer (even though I wasn't). So that will not help you any. Sounds like you had the best solution for now by using Manual.

Good luck finding a manual transmission on a new truck. There are very few out there, but will probably go the way of the dinosaur.

And that's Manual as in Manual Mode on the shifter...

The way these trucks, not GM in particular, shift, I rather the stick. Hopefully they don't discontinue them. I am sick of autos gear hunting.
