2500 6.0 slow to go into reverse

Postby Russtoy [OP] » Jan 24 2012, 4:25am

Hi I'm a newby, lucky me . I was looking ot find out if anybody else has the same problem I have. It is more anoying then anything else. The trans is SLOW going into reverse. It always goes but it can take10-30 seconds. sometimes it drops in nice other time it drops in hard I have owned the truck for about 8 years and it has done it for 6/7 of those years. The fluid/filter have been changed when I noticed the problem but it did not change. National transmission did the change and saw nothing in the pan, to indicate any problems. The truck has 250,000 turns on it so it is not a low miler. It doen't slip, it is just slow. Very annoying when trying to plow snow. I am not hard on it by any means, I push easy when plowing not very fast as I don't want to have to fix it. Just wondering if anyone else has the same issues? Thanks for your info . Russtoy

   Wow I did not expect to stump the experts on this site. I guess my problem is unique to my truck. :? :? :? I guess when it breaks I will put a new one in. Then I will find out what is wrong.

The stumper is that it's been doing it for so long. No clue what it's doing or why.....
I just thought I'd give it a "bump" for ya, so others see this.

We had a F150 on our GPS Survey team that was similar to this after we had a new trans installed and it turned out to be an linkage adjustment problem. It could be that?

Z15 might have a good point.. Since you plow snow I'm sure your PRNDL and linkage get a good workout. Might be something to look into.

I myself am amazed that it has gone this long too. I would think if it was the linkage, Iwould have a slight problem with other shifts. The shift in all gears is good, put it in 1st goes into 1st, second, third, ect, they ae all there except reverse. I have loked at the linkage it is all tight no slop, connections all seem good too. yea this is a real puzzler. Thanks for you help guys. I was hoping someone else had this same problem. So I could get some insight on what they have tried. Thanks Russtoy

If you could eliminate the PRNDL as the problem (i guess by having a trans shop test it or replacing it), it might be possible that the shift valve in the valve body is sticking and it's taking a while before main pressure can move it. I'm not sure if that valve is accessible by just dropping the pan, but if it is you could take it out and inspect it for burrs or rough spots..

The PRNDL is the switch on the side of the transmission that the linkage connects to. I think that it has 2 connectors going to it.
