Swapping Transmissions

4L60E

Postby starterz [OP] » Dec 16 2010, 7:15pm

So I found this 4L60E Automatic Transmission online that came out of a 1994 Silverado 2WD Longbed. He claims to have had a rebuild around 40K miles ago and is selling for $250. I have a 2001 Silverado that also has this transmission (4L60E Code:M30). Will that transmission fit in my truck? If not what are the differences? I know I heard about "UPDATES" but is unfamiliar with them.

I think the main questions are what computer connections does the '94 tranny have? Are they compatible with your 2001? I am not familiar with the year-to-year variations, so I can't tell you what updates happened in those 7 years. But I'd definitely find out if they are compatible before buying. What is so wrong with yours that you're willing to take the risk on an older one?

Well the reason I'm looking at this transmission is because it's cheap, sounds reliable, and I need one. The problem with my transmission is that it is slipping on 2nd. BAD. I am now only using my truck as a work truck. Driving (12 miles a day) and praying it dosnt give out.

NOW I understand... In that case, it seems to be a reasonably cheap route, provided you get some answers to a bunch of questions:

How good was the rebuild (and is it still in good shape)?
How can you test it? Is it still in the guy's truck?
Are there any physical differences that would make it incompatible with yours?
I'm thinking of the:
  1. computer plug
  2. firmware on the computer card/sensors if any in the tranny?
  3. Bell housing
  4. tailhousing

Since I am no expert, I did surf a little to find this description of the transmission on Wikipedia, which seems to confirm there are some physical differences between the earlier one and yours.
The electronic version of the THM700 transmission, 4L60-E, was introduced in 1993 for trucks, vans, and SUVs, and 1994 for rear wheel drive passenger cars. 1993-95 production 4L60-Es look similar to non-electronic 4L60s (including the 700R4) with the absence of a governor and throttle valve cable; an electronic plug was positioned where the TV cable once stood. Around 1996, a bolt-on bell housing was phased in (along with a six-bolt tailhousing) when the transmission was bolted behind an inline four cylinder or the Vortec engine family.
If you want to do what you want to do, you have to do what you have to do.
