4x4 grinding noise from front when engaged

4x4 grinding noise

Postby Gananea [OP] » Dec 31 2012, 2:53am

I have a 2006 Chevy Silverado, 5.3L V8 4x4 exteneded cab. On my way home from work, I had to put my truck into 4 wheel drive (high) and I noticed a grinding noise coming from the front end, more so on the driver side and the steering became stiff.I put it back into 2 wheel drive and got a jolt. Any idea what is happening? Is my 4x4 toast? I bought an extended warranty when I bought the truck so I hope its covered but I want to have some clue of what is happening.

Thanks :?:  :?:

I'm assuming you did not do this on a road surface that had good traction. Possibly a bad front axle shaft.

lot of factors.. but I'd first ponder the last time it was serviced or put into 4x4? I heard somewhere shifting through 4x4 gears once a month is recommended...

I have a 1994 ck 1500 5.7L, with a 4L60e trans. Two days ago I was in town and had to get into the gas to get around a car so I could change lanes, and when I did I got a very loud grinding noise and the truck would not go. I let off the gas and the noise stopped, but as soon as I touched the gas it started again and had some forward movement. I was able to lightly touch the gas to get it into a parking lot and off the road. When I stopped I put the truck in park and let it sit running for a minute and when I put in reverse the same very loud grinding started again. I am unable to put it in gear without that noise. It sounds like it is coming from the transfer case. A friend told me sometimes they will get stuck between gears and by playing with the shifter for transfer case you can get it to go back. No luck ther. I am thinking I may need a new transfer case. Any suggestions.
