4x4 moaning

Postby 3mkennels [OP] » Jan 17 2012, 6:56pm

I have a 2007 Sierra WT that i bought in Oct. A couple weeks ago I noticed the the rubber boot on the Drivers side front axel was throwing grease and haven't had time to replace it yet. Well since it's winter here in Wv and I'm using the 4x4 more often, I've noticed a moaning sound when I'm 4x4 and it's been getting louder the more times I use it. Could that split boot really be causing that much noise?

#2 what do you recommend the split boot repair kit or replacing the axel?

As for the axle, I myself would put a new axle in it, especially if you have been driving it without grease in it. The noise could be lots of things, can you pinpoint where the noise is comming from? Id start with checking the fluid level in the front and rear diff and the transfer case.

4x4 moaning

Yeah I think your cv joint is hooped, you'll have to replace the joint or get a new complete assembly.

I have a 2006 crew cab and it does the same thing especially going down hill. Fluid levels in mine are normal. I would like to here more opinions. Changing the CV shouldn't be to difficult if you did it your self.

I'm not sure on the noise issue. Normally cv joints will make a clicking noise when they are worn. As far as the shaft/boot, I'd replace the whole assembly. It is much easier than trying to put a boot on and they are not nearly as expensive as they used to be.

No I haven't had a chance to check the fluids. I really noticed the noise got worse Sunday and haven't had a chance to get under the truck.

Experts, With that boots having a hole in it, I got under the truck to check fluids. Well I noticed the both sides of the front Diff was leaking out the seals. Would that potentially cause the moaning in 4x4? I have at the dealership now being looked at to get the seals replaced and boot. But I'm not sure if the 5 yr power train warranty will cover those items.

If it leaked enough of the fluid out that the bearings and gears were not properly lubricated it could cause all kinds of problems, including strange noises.
