97 z71 trans problem

Postby lonestar27 [OP] » Sep 14 2012, 11:37pm

Howdy guys im new here...so first let me say thanks for having me..Ok now the problem..I was cruising down the highway and was going to pass another driver when i just lost power to the drive train..after that i noticed for the next few mile my trans was loosing power here and there..when i got to a spot to pull over i got out and gave my truck a once over...while standing by my front passenger side tire i noticed something wrong...One of my starter wires had come loose and melted on the manifold..So i figured if nothing else i better fix that...so i did and low and behold my truck ran great after words....to make a long story short it happened again with the starter wire...but after fixing this time my truck would not stay running at idle..So i limped it home..by the time i got home the trans was clanging and banging and sounding horrible..ive re fixed the starter permanently and replaced the torque converter as i know it controls the stall...Sooo starter fixed new torque converter...but the clanging and banging is louder than ever...What would yall suggest my next step be please any info would be great thanks guys and love the site

If in fact, its your tranny making that kind of noise , its life is about over. Might want to start shopping around for a replaced one or rebuild cost at a shop before it scatters on the road..

I would not condemn the transmission yet. Are you sure it is the transmission that is making the noise? Are you sure it's not starter related (such as the bendix being bad and sloppy, causing it to hit the flexplate)?

I am not 100 percent positive..but i have lead my self to believe it for the reason of the stall at idle...would the starter cause this problem if it were slapping the flex plate...,i guess ill pull the trans tomorrow and crank her up and see if the noise still exist

97 z71 trans problem

Postby Machster69 » Sep 19 2012, 3:06am

You should be able to visually see if the bendix is stuck... And maybe pull on it to make sure it isnt "sloppy"(loose, moving)

A dirty tb could cause a stall @ idle...

Yes, you could have more than one problem and they may not be related to each other.

I've seen this happen before, and the problem was that after a couple rounds of that starter wire zapping the hell out of everything, the starter no longer worked so good and the bendix would get stuck just about every time the truck started...and then after a couple days if hitting with a hammer after every start, it just failed entirely. I'd take a look at your flex plate and make sure it isn't bent (easy because you don't need to drop the tranny to do so) and failing that, grab a starter from a junkyard and throw it in to see what happens.
