Broken G80 differential?

Postby starspangled6.0 [OP] » Dec 25 2012, 4:12pm

The Silverado has a tendency to light up only one rear tire in the snow\ice. Once in a while, it will lock up the rear, but it's a royal pain in the rear to drive in the snow, since 4x4 is constantly needed (and the tires are crappy). Any ideas? It doesn't make any sounds, but I'm wondering if something broke inside it.

I worked on one a while ago that had the small gear for the governor weight broken. It never would lock up though. You could take the cover off and do a visual inspection.

OK. That's not a bad idea... Is there a certain speed I need to hit, to make it lock? With 800 lbs. ft. of torque at just above idle, it's impossible to get going from a stop in the winter :x

I'm not sure of a minimum speed, but I do think there is a maximum speed it will kick in at.

if you broke a tooth on the ring gear........i need to shake your hand because that is some HAAAAAAAAARD stuff. we did a shave kit on a 14bolt a couple months back which involves putting the ring gear in the lathe and taking off like .015 of an inch off. we broke 4 carbide drill bits and saved the fifth one and just used a grinder.......which took us a looooong time

visual inspection is best, pop the diff cover with the rear axle off the ground and have a buddy spin the tires manually so you can see the ring gear turning

OK. I'm assuming that it's going to be obvious if something is broken (metal in the gear oil, loose parts, etc.)?

oh ya youll know. when you drain the fluid, put a magnet in the drain bucket. if theres a chunk or metal shavings attached to it...you got somethin broken

Postby cumminsmannow » Dec 25 2012, 5:02pm

I was reading the specs on the g80 and it wont lock above 20mph. Mine with 165k on it still works very good. I also have crappy tires.
