Recently I've been experiencing that frustrating driveline vibe between 25-30 mph and between 45-55 mph. I had the truck in the base auto hobby shop this weekend to cahnge the tranny fluid and filter and in doing a brief inspection of the rest of the driveline I noticed a good amount of slop in the center carrier bearing grommet. I can easily shake it side-to-side a good 1/4" and I assume the rubber has aged a bit.
So what's the jury's take on center carrier bearings? Should they feel firm or have some play in them?
BTW, all the U-joint's are solid and I've yet to replace the diff oil; but since the vibration is only at certain speeds, I doubt the diff is the cause.
No change to the working angles but I do a lot of trailering. But I shook the hell out of the UJs and there seemed be no play. Well, if the UJs are bad, it'll be a good opportunity to blast and POR-15 the drive shaft.
Put the vehicle on flat land at block the front wheels. Raise up the rear of the vehicle and support it with jackstands. Apply the parking brake and mark the driveshaft so you can do your best to put it back in the same "clocking" it had before. Have some duct tape available to wrap around the U joint caps once you remove the shaft so you dont lose parts. Loosen the four capscrews at the rear flange, pry the driveshaft forward slightly and remove the shaft. To remove the U joint, remove the clips and rent a U joint tool at your local jobber. Done deal. You've never removed a driveshaft?
As stated above, check the u-joints. To answer your question, yes, the carrier bearing sounds like it may be bad. They can cause drivline vibration as well.
