above 50 miles an hour i am getting a very light squeaking noise i believe somewhere in the vicinity of the transfer case. u joint is goo but there is lateral and end play in the yoke on the tail shaft of the transfer case i don't know if thats normal. it is pretty faint. also how hard is a transfer case to rebuild i would say I'm a mechanic but have never done one

Have you checked the output shaft bushing for excessive wear?

Have you checked your fluid levels in the transfer case and diffs?

The tailshaft bushing is right in front of the rear output seal on the transfer case. I'm not sure if you can take it out while the transfer case is in the vehicle or not. You can see it after you remove the output shaft seal to see if it looks worn.

Have you taken the drive shaft out and checked the u-joint? How do you know it is ok? I do not think a bad output shaft would cause a squeek. If it did I would think it would be more than a slight one and I'd think the rear output seal would be leaking as well.

its more ticking than it is squeeking and it ticks about every second or two but its not like a fast ticking i.e. slower than a valve tick

dry u-joints will make a squeak or ticking sound. Seen it before, u-joint seems tight but take it apart and its dried out and rusted.

I agree, from what you describe it does sound like a u-joint problem. Luckily it's not a difficult or expensive fix.
