Failing Transmission :(

Postby ALFONSO318 [OP] » May 27 2011, 1:16am

I took a 5 hr road trip the other day and 2 separate occasions the truck shifted super hard right around the 30 mph mark....almost as if the truck disengaged and then caught really hard again...it sort of scared me so i took it to a Chevy dealership to check up on it...guy said that my tranny fluid was burnt and that it was throwing codes showing that my tranny was slipping...i am moving soon and i have to complete a 16 hr road trip across country...the guy suggested that we dont changed the fluid because he seemed to think that is a the only think keeping the tranny from slipping more ( the junk in the fluid acting like a more grippy deal)...now i havent noticed that it shifts hard anymore but i'm kinda upset because i bought this truck recently and the place wants $$$3300 to put a new Re-Man tranny in it...i passed on the tranny hoping to maintain it a little longer so i put some LUCAS NO SLIP TRANNY goop in it...does anyone have any other suggestions to help maintain my potentially slipping/shot tranny???

Baby it. No hard acceleration, no pulling heavy loads, you towing anything when moving? I wouldn't. Keep a charged cell phone with you in case.

I made it safely to my destination! I did notice that now at about 10 mph every time unless i'm like grandpa-in the thing it will shift incredibly hard and occasionally rough at about 20-25 mph range...when driving a constant speed or having to get on the gas at about 65+ there are no issues...

Should i just go RE-MAN from Chevy for $3500 roughly

or

Should i take it to a tranny shop and see what they can do?

Take it to an independent shop. When the tahoes in our fleet (police) go down, we get them rebuilt for about 1,800 and they give us a 2 year warranty.

Not likely. I'd bet your truck has a 4L60E, not a 4L80E. Anyone with more experience wanna confirm?

Mine started doing the same thing last month I dropped the pan & replace the filter & fluid hoping to fix it, It did not. The fluid was not dark nor did it smell, it looked almost new. I did find microscopic metal shavings attached to the magnet on the bottom of the pan. Also I had to unbolt the front driveshaft in order to get the pan down & I could not get the drain plug out. I am planning on taking it to AAMCO to get an estimate hope it is not too much.
