Friction noise???

Postby noah2500hd [OP] » Mar 18 2012, 2:44pm

Hi everyone. I just bought a 2002 2500hd 4x4 6.0l. It does have a warranty on trans, engine and rears. There is a rubbing sound coming from center console area that gets most noticable at 30mph and up. It almost sounds like the air is on but its not of course. The trans shifts well and of my limited knowledge im not mistaking it for wheel bearings. At first i thought the brakes were rubbing or dirty but the sound does not change when applying/letting off brakes. There is no harsh grinding or clunking. Its pretty much a steady rubbing sound. Any pointers of what to start with is greatly appreciated. Thanks

First, welcome to the site!
We'll see what we can do to help with that.

  1. Does the noise happen only when the truck is moving?
  2. Does it change in pitch with speed?
  3. Does it disappear when the radio / audio system is off?
  4. Is there some place (safe) where you can coast with the trans in neutral and engine off?
If something were rubbing on the drivetrain, you'd see it as a clean spot on the drivetrain.
If you want to do what you want to do, you have to do what you have to do.

A. It is only while moving

B. It doesn't change pitch, it gets louder

C. The radio on or off does not change it

D. I can try the coasting and ill also crawl under and look for clean spots and ill get back with my findings. Thanks

The first thing to come to mind is u-joints. When they get dried out they can make weird sounds.

i just looked under the truck and found a significant amount of play where the driveshaft goes into the tcase. No leaking just a lot of movement. up and down play is about between 1/16 and 1/8 inch and it rotates by hand about from starting at 12 oclock to 2-3 oclock. The u joints seem tight.

Ok so I hear the noise while coasting in nuetral with engine off. I found there was little to no fluid in transfer case and an "L" shaped piece of metal 3/4" long came out. I put in new fluid and noise is the same.

I cant say its shot because it goes into 4wd, not so smoothly as it probably should but still goes. Other than the noise it drives smooth. Its hard because i have to drive it to hear it. With the windows down it sound like im dragging something at higher speeds, im going by "reflective sound" off of buildings, guiderail etc.. I cant find a hole in tcase yet but a drop of fluid at the bottom but just cant tell where from. Also with windows down at slow speed i hear "chattering" which i cant hear with windows up and im guessing thats the slow speed version of the same problem, maybe. If it is the pump rub issue thats causeing all this, how much damage could it have done considering the otherwise smooth ride? If i put in the pump rub fixer part and theres no damage will that fix the problem? Could i have multiple problems? If you can't tell im in panic mode. Also does anyone have expeiriance with C.A.R.S. Protection Plus warranty?
