Hard shift into 2nd gear

Under med-hard accel, shift into second is hard

Hard shift into 2nd gear

Postby Dan.b [OP] » Jan 17 2013, 4:44am

Not sure of the source of the problem and scrubbing the forums yielded a wide bit of speculation.

Just got a new used-Silverado. I'm not not hard on acceleration generally, so I didn't notice it, but after finding it accidentally, I can readily reproduce it.

Symptom: When accellerating with mid to heavy acceleration, the shift from 1st to 2nd kicks. Also happens out of "neutral", like a slow coast at 10 mph into a moderate acceleration. No other gears kick, 2nd-3rd is fine as is 3rd-4th.

Proposed remedies:
  1. Baby the throttle at low speed
  2. Flush and top off tranny fluid and filter
  3. Get a new set of bands ($1500)
  4. Get a shifter kit

Any thoughts on how to narrow this down. Is it ok to drive while I decide?

-Dan

Are you sure it's not a sticking slip yoke?

Not sure at all... I'm just shopping ideas.

It seems to be have a fair number of posts, but not many definitive answers.

Silverado, 5.3L 2WD, 2005.

So I'm praying that it can be fixed with a slip yoke repair.
