IN and OUT of Overdrive??

IN and OUT of Overdrive??

Postby Bigboysmith04 [OP] » Jun 30 2012, 12:25am

Hello im new to this and just want to get some information. I have a 00 silverado 5.3, has 4" lift, flowmaster, 305's and 16 inch wheels. Everything else is stock. When im done accelerating and cruising my rpms will go up about 300 for about 5-10 sec annoying cause you can hear it in the exhaust, then ill get a slip shift, normal shift or a hard shift its a different shift every time. Really just sounds like its going in and out of gear. I took it to the shop cause i thought it was my torque converter going but they said it was fine, they said it was the over sized tires throwing off the shift points? Any help would be great!!

What gear ration are you running? It sounds to me like the shop is right on the money. It may be time to get some lower gears.

Yea, with those 4.10's it's not going to be a gear ratio problem. Are you sure the transmission is not slipping? How does the fluid look and smell? Somethimes if an engine is misfiring it will seem like a transmission problem. Do you have a check engine light on? A diagnostic scanner (not a code reader) should be able to tell if you have any problems in the transmission as well.

i dont think the trans is slipping cause it shifts perfect, and fluid looks good i just took it to the trans shop and the drove the truck for a half hour and no codes, all the could tell me was they think it the over size tires throwing it off. i noticed the other day when im driving on a hilly road it almost sounds like the rpms are going up and down just by the sound of the exhaust. its just annoying everyone keeps telling me just drive so im thinking thats what i have to do!!

Your torque converter is designed to lock at cruising speeds but it will unlock if the Rpms and torque are loaded.

+1 on the torque converter releasing under those conditions.

So you think this is normal? But why the Rpms go up?
