Installing Aux transmission cooler

How do I disconnect the existing lines?

Installing Aux transmission cooler

Postby scarpo [OP] » Aug 12 2011, 1:27pm

I bought the GM aux trans cooler kit for my 2011 Sierra, it looks easy to install but I can't get the quick connect lines to come apart where they connect to the radiator and transmission. I bought a tool at Auto Zone that said it was for that fitting but it won't work. Anyone done this before? It looks like the tool should slide around the pipe and release the spring retainer but it won't fit in the groove between the pipe and fitting.

Get a small hook or flat head and pop the clip/spring off. But don't loose the clip/spring cause you may need to reuse it

I had mine installed at a shop, and it looks lie they cut the hoses and ran the lines with fittings off of there.

I bought the GM accessory oil cooler, you are not required to cut any lines. You have to disconnect remove and discard the line that runs from the top radiator connection to the top connection on the transmission and install a new line that came with the kit that runs from the trans to the new oil cooler. Then install another new line from the new cooler to the top connection on the radiator. They give you all the clamps and bolts. It looks real easy except for the special tool requirment and the tight space where the pipe connects to the transmission. I think I located the tool at Advance Auto Parts, it has to be ordered on line.

Ya I am wondering why they cut my lines, but I haven't towed with it yet however I am only seeing a small difference in temps with it. I am a bit concerned actually as the truck was running about 197 before and is running 180-194 now so I dunno I told the shop that recommended it and he said he could put a bigger one on it.

It looks to me like with the new aux cooler installed the fluid will run from the trans through the radiator like it did without the aux cooler then run through the aux cooler so it should knock the temp down at least 15 to 20F on a warm day since the rad temp would be 230F or so and the air temp would be say 80F. The cooler has about 10 rows of tubes about 12" long.

Hey Scarpo, where were the transmission lines located on your radiator? Did they connect to the radiator on the passenger side?
