Postby motormanimattxp [OP] » Apr 08 2011, 5:23am

ok i have notice every time i have put my truck in reverse it clunks loud. so on the way to the movies tonight, i took a sharp left turn and it felt like my truck was locking up and making a loud noise until i straighten out. so i got there, after the movie i got in my truck and it seem really bad. so finaly my truck stoped moving and i heard grears clunking in the back and my truck would not move just making alot of noise but when it did move it was jerking you hard! so i put my truck in 4wd and it moved. my truck is in park and i can push it in 2wd. so can i rebuild my rear end? or can i buy a used one, but i dont know how much a used one cost, does any one now? i really need some help, my dad gonna flip! but can i drive my truck home in 4wd tomrrow? my truck is a 2000 silverado 1500 4x4 v8 5.3L

Sounds like the ring and pinion are done for.Take the rear diff. cover off and take a look then go from there.

My brother did that same thinh to his 72 Chevy truck flooring it in reverse and then dropping it into drive and flooring it again. He gutted his ring and pinion, have you been beating it pretty hard? And yes, you should be able to rebuild it with no problem or pick one up from a like model and a salvage yard, it will just cost money.

You're going to have to call some repair shops or salvage yards for price quotes. I have seen people with older trucks drive with only the front drive shaft while waiting on a rear. I wouldn't advise it if you can afford a tow, you are still spinning the rear drive shaft only leaving room for more distruction in the rear diff.

That's what happened to my dodge. When you open that rear diff parts are gonna just fall out. It's not going to be cheap. My repairs were about $1100 but I also got a new touque converter.

My wife's rear end went bad, too. It was good the first ten years or so of our marriage but then it started getting wider and wider and...... Oh, you're talking about the rear end in your truck? Never mind.
Check your local wrecking yard for a used one and make sure you get one with the same gear ratio or you could be running in circles.
Good luck and I hope your dad understands.

hey bro best advice is to go to your local junk yard and up date your your rear end with a newer model i have a 1999 silverado and the spider gears are really weakso i put in a 2004 rear end in the truck it only had about 25,000 miles on it so it was pratically new and i only paid $400 for it so well worth it. because most places are gonna charge you at least $1000 or more and you can do it yourself good luck..........
