No 3rd gear

No 3rd gear

Postby GElite [OP] » Aug 12 2012, 6:23pm

I've got a 2002 4.3 silverado ls 2x4 and a few week ago it quit shifting into 3rd gear. If you put it in drive it go thru 1st, 2nd, and then the engine just starts racing at 3rd. If you floor it it will go into the pasing gear and sometimes it may hit 3rd but not for long. Any ideas on what I can do to fix it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You probably cleaned out what was left of the gunk holding the transmission together. If the transmission hasn't been maintained properly flushing and fluid swaps can make problems worse. It's probably time to have it rebuilt. There is a thread on here discussing this very topic.

Hell it's already been rebuilt one but that was a while back. It's seems weird every other gear shifts out fine.

It's hard to tell, I know Aste worked or works on transmissions maybe he might be able to point you in the right direction.

Is there not a shift soilanoid for 3rd that I can check or perhaps something I can do to rule out anything other than it needing a rebuild. I'd hate to swap trannys and it continue to do the same thing.

there is a shift solenoid. but i know on the 4L60E 1st and 3RD gears are weak in the trans. we had a 02 z28 and when it tried to shift in to 3rd it acted like it was in neutral and had a good trans shop rebuild it and it worked like a champ after. and being that the trans started acting up after the fluid was flushed there is a good chance that the trans was on its way out and doing the flush cleaned out all the clutch material helping the trans work i would have the trans looked at by a trans shop.

4l60e? Is that the tranny in the 4.3. I didn't realize the 6's and the 8's had the same tranny.

yea my 09 has a variant of the 4L60E i think my 09 with the 4.8 is a 4L65E same case and all but different electronics and upgraded parts inside. but yea GM used the 4L60E behind the 4.3l, 4.8l, 5.3l, and the 5.7l LS1 and the older trucks like the 5.0L and the 5.7l from the md 90's till now..

common failure parts in the 4L60E is 1st and 3rd gear clutch packs, and the sun gear. if you take the truck to a trans shop and if it needs rebuilt ask if they do any upgrades to hard parts in the trans to make it stronger that stock so that you won't have to go through a rebuilt for a long time.. a good trans shop will tell you some of the weak links in this trans and tell you how they remedy the issues. and talk to several trans shops and see what they say and try and get them to go into a little detail and don't always go for the cheapest shop because you get what you pay for..
