Odd noise when decelerating in 4wd

Odd noise when decelerating in 4wd

Postby nysilveradoman [OP] » Jan 01 2012, 4:39pm

I have an 06 Silverado with just over 60K miles and 5.3L. Ill preface that this only happens in 4wd, 2wd is no issue.

When I am in 4wd and allow the truck to coast before braking or during braking, I am hearing a very odd humming, to light grinding noise. So far one dealership has told me that noise is normal, however I disagree. It started just within the last week or so. I have had a few different 4wd trucks in my life and have never heard this before. Any advise on what it could be or is this truly normal for this vehicle?

Probably normal to have some drivetrain noise when in 4wd. Consider changing transfer case fluid.

Can you tell if it is coming from the front or under you?

The noise seems to be coming from the rear center of the vehicle.

Odd noise when decelerating in 4wd

So transfer case area. Nothing on acceleration, only decel? Check your oil, look for metal in it, you'll have to drain it.

+1

And remember, the 4WD system isn't made to be used all the time, so a little noise is normal. Both my 97 Sierra and my 03 Sierra made noise in 4WD- a little hum, a little vibration. Both worked flawlessly.

Same here. I was in 4wd High last night and this morning, and could hear a hum when I got into the gas pretty good. A couple "clunks" when I decelerated too. I think it's normal stuff.

I used 4wd HI for first time today and upon slowly turning left into parking lot and decelerating slightly down hill, I heard a groan and clunk, and the truck wouldn't drift normally, like the tranny was holding back the truck. It def made me concerned..2011 with just over 2K miles. Normal?

Yup. It definitely takes some getting used to. You probably won't be able to slip and slide around at all in 4WD, since the front wheels are always pulling the truck straight.
