Power Limits of Transmissions

Postby starspangled6.0 [OP] » Dec 22 2011, 6:29pm

How much power can a stock 4L80E safely handle, before upgrades are needed? How about the Allison 5-speed and 6-speed?

I have seen in diesel power mags allison's holding up running 500 or 600 horsepower. I think I saw one with a truck that had around 700. I'm not sure how long they will last and i'm not sure how much abuse those guys put on them.

Were they unmodified transmissions? I wouldn't mind upgrading the tranny, if I was spending $10K on the engine already :D. But, I'd like to know how much abuse they can take, before they need upgrading.

Yes they were unmodified. If your really interested in upgrading your tranny go look at dieselpowermag.com or duramaxforum.com. These websites might be able to give you some specific numbers as far as hp and torque as to what these transmissions can actually handle.

If you were going to put 10k into the motor it would probably be a good investment to put some money into the tranny.

And if you're putting that much power through the tranny, you'll have to upgrade the rest of the drivetrain, too. Axles, driveshafts, ect. When you upgrade one thing, the next weakest link always fails.
Dang it's hot!

not sure on the 4l80 e ...but the allison, i know i was always told when i had my old duramax, not to add anything over 125 hp over stock. You will start limping the tranny, and in turn damaging it. It will limp easier and easier after you do it once!

Good point, Hartski. Sounds like a wonderful problem to have :D! I haven't decided yet if I want to supercharge this truck, or just get a Duramax instead...
