Rear end gear change questions

Postby starspangled6.0 [OP] » Feb 07 2011, 5:33pm

I've got a 4.10 rear axle on my 03 2500HD, and am wondering about what would happen if I got smaller numerical gears- I know acceleration would drop, but fuel economy would go up. 11 mpg is not my cup of tea; however, this is a truck, and that's what trucks do- suck gas and haul... well, you get the point. The truck is rated at 10,000 lbs towing, and I will probably max that out at some point, so I can't really mess with that too much.
How much would the towing capacity drop? Is a rear end swap pretty expensive? I'll most likely leave the gears alone, but I'm just curious about pricing, and how it would affect the towing, acceleration, etc.

I hate to state the obvious, but don't forget that you can pretty much double the cost of a gear swap since your truck is 4x4.

As to the cost - if you want to do it yourself, I'd call Randy's Ring and Pinion (apologies if the site has a sponsor for this type of thing...) They can get you everything you need and I'd start there to get pricing and options.

My advice is to stay with what you have though.

Probably looking at over a grand to do both front and rears. And towing capacity would decrease.

Ok, sticking with my current setup... time to go off on a different question here (don't tell Austin!): My truck is rated at 10,000 pounds- is this for the hitch or for 5th-wheeling?

I would say hitch, but pay attention to the rated hitch weight. You can be pulling half that, but if a lot of the weight is on the hitch, bad things happen.
