Rear end

Postby bsnowden [OP] » Dec 04 2011, 5:06pm

I have a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500 4X4 when I put the truck into gear there is a clicking/grinding noise coming from the rear end and it won't lock into gear but the truck will run in 4 wheel drive any suggestions on what this could be?

I had a 2000 that did the same thing, had to have it replaced at about 60K. A mechanic friend of mine did it, don't know what he put in it but I have over 100K on it.

Sounds like a ring-gear let go, possibly a stripped yolk - either way it sounds like you're looking at some extensive rear axle repair. What were you doing with the truck when the problem first occured?

Best bet is probably getting a used axle out of a junk yard - there are so many of these trucks out there that you should be able to find a fairly low mileage unit and have very limited downtime.

Pull the fill plug on the rear axle and check the fluid in it. If it looks metallic it's probably gone and will need a rebuild.
