Ring and Pinion conversion

Postby love4chevysilverado [OP] » Feb 25 2011, 1:49am

Alright so I got a serious question that need answering

Basically the ring and pinion ratio in my front and rear axles is 3.73:1, but if I increase my tire size, say from 27" inch to 40", what would an optimal gear ratio be? some performance and some fuel economy

I was thinking since I currently have 3.73:1, I would swap to a 5.29 or maybe a 5.38

This is kinda a serious speedbump because I need to price out all my pieces.....if i have to i can just take it to the shop and have them swap out the 3.73 to a higher ratio, but I need to be as cost efficient as possible so if i can do it myself then i can save extra $$$ for other stuff....like tires

any and all suggestions would be great, good or bad
thanks, Max

Cost efficient and ratio change cannot be in the same sentence. Have you priced out a ratio change? It's more than you think.

yeah ive been told that the swap was going to be expensive, but heres the thing, ill be honest im a newbie to all the truck stuff i just know the basics, so would it be smart to shell out the extra cash and take it to the shop and have a trained tech do it for me or just swap the gears myself an save whatever amount of money it would cost to do otherwise? and also how difficult is it to do this install?

4wheelparts in my area (as well as other independent 4x4 shops) charge between $300 and $400 to regear an axle (that is one axle). You also need to pay for new gear oil, disposal fees, and parts. Gears are not something that the average shade tree mechanic can do. Do a google search yukon axles and I think their website has a step-by-step instruction book.

You can also google a regear calculator that will give you numbers to keep the the final drive ratio consistent with the factory ratio when changing gears. When you start talking about 40" tires, cost efficiency is long gone. I am an avid offroader (Jeeps) and routinely break axles shafts and ring/pinion gears and would really encourage you to do a lot of research into whether the factor axles can stomach that large of a tire.
